Beautiful stay in a rural countryside, perfect for outings across the island provided one has a car.
Pros: It was, as the title suggests, a mostly quiet countryside retreat with a nice garden and within the lush foothills at approximately 700m altitude. The nearest town is Santo da Serra which has a nice farmer's market - it is worth mentioning that this is open on Sundays only. For us it was perfect after arriving on Saturday evening. Santo da Serra also has got other shops which open all week, so one does not have to drive all the way into Santa Cruz or Funchal to do shopping. We liked that the property is situated not too far away from the airport, but also quiet and outside the hustle and bustle of the capital Funchal. The old house has got a modern glass extension to the front with beautiful views over the valley. There is a place to eat quite close by which is the snack bar Juza. This was an experience of it own, as you buy the meat at a butcher downstairs and then you barbeque the meat yourself or the help of local residents. Very tasty, very rustic, and very value for money!
Cons: It would have been useful if there had been a drying rack in the property for drying towels e.g. outside in the sunny garden or inside the glass extension. The leg room between the front of the WC pan and the wall is a bit tight. There is also a fairly tight winding staircase worth mentioning which is connecting the old house lounge with the upstairs bedrooms. We were okay with it but people with wider body girth might struggle? Alternatively, they could use the external staircase if needed, just to be aware. The gate to the driveway is right on the roadside. Although the road is fairly calm, the gate is situated in a road curve. We managed it by having a second person waving to the driver for potential oncoming traffic. Just mentioning it for awareness.
